Endangered Species of the Everglades
By Jungle Erv • January 17, 2019
Going on a tour of the Everglades is not just about the thrill of seeing the wildlife on an airboat ride, like alligators or snakes, but also about seeing if you can spot some of the endangered species that are found in the Everglades. While it is not something that is guaranteed because, by definition, there are not many of these endangered species around anymore- it is possible to see one of them. These are some of the endangered species to keep an eye out for on your next Florida Everglades tour.
There are fewer than 100 Florida Panthers left in the wild and while they used to be common throughout the US, now they can only be found in the Everglades. Because there are so few of them left, it is difficult to find them in the wild so you would be very lucky if you did see one on your Everglades airboat tour.
Even though it is common to see an alligator while in the Everglades, it is one of the few places that you can see one. They are found in marshes and the Everglades is the perfect habitat for them. Because they need to have a very specific habitat, they are limited to the Everglades and some surrounding areas.
West Indian Manatee
These manatees are a favorite for people to see but they are not always easy to spot. They stay submerged in the ocean water for 20 minutes and do not come up but for 5 minutes after that time. You really need to time everything right in order to see the West Indian Manatee while on your Florida Everglades ride.
The Wood Stork has been on the endangered species list since 1984 but has been doing well in the Everglades since it was downgraded to the threatened list in 2014. Because of this, you will likely see it on an airboat tour. It stands a little over 3 feet tall and has a wing span of 5 feet- which makes it pretty hard to miss!
